What are EAS AM systems?

Acoustic magnetic system, is the use of the resonance phenomenon generated by the tuning fork principle, to achieve almost zero false alarm operation. When the frequency of the transmitting signal (alternating magnetic field) is the same as the oscillation frequency of the acoustic magnetic tag, the acoustic magnetic tag similar to a tuning fork will cause resonance and produce a resonant signal (alternating magnetic field) ; when the receiver detects the resonant signal 4-8 times in a row (adjustable) (once every 1/50 second), the receiving system will issue an alarm. The characteristics of the acoustic magnetic system are high anti-theft detection rate, almost zero false alarms, not shielded by metal tin foil, good anti-interference, wide exit of protection (single system can protect up to 4 meters wide).

AM Antenna

One of the main advantages of acoustic magnetic technology is that it can provide a longer detection range than RF, and it is usually not vulnerable to external electronic interference.
For retailers, this provides greater flexibility for antenna installation. The antenna can be installed on the base, hidden in the door frame, or under the floor of the store entrance.
Meanwhile, AM adhesive security labels can often work on or near metals where other technologies fail.

AM tags and labels

AM hard tags come in a range of sizes and can be reused.
Although smaller than RF tags, am tags are not paper, but have a raised outline. Tags may be deactivated and reactivated, although this is not a common practice. They are activated when magnetized and deactivated when degaussed.

AM is more often seen in small to large clothing apparel outlets, large department stores, DIY shops, electronic shops, and pharmaceutical retailers where products have metallic components in their packaging.

Benefits of AM

• The detection area is larger, so the antenna can be placed further away.
• Less susceptible to electronic interference.
• The system can be hidden in the door structure or under the floor.

Disadvantages of AM

• The cost is usually higher than RF.
• The label cannot be bent around the commodity and is not easy to print.
• The AM antenna is not easy to upgrade to RFID.
• AM was traditionally more expensive to install than RF, however due to increased competition, system costs have come down in recent years.
• The raised profile of AM labels has also been seen as a drawback for retailers like grocery stores who sell small, high-turnover goods.

How do I use AM hard tags?

AM hard tags are easy to use. If the AM hard tag has a pin or lanyard, simply insert the pin into the hole in the body of the hard tag. The pin will immediately lock into place. To unlock the pin, you will need to use a magnetic separator. AM hard tags have a locking mechanism, depending on the model. The AM hard tag will also unlock with the magnetic detacher.
